A PLAN FOR URBAN DIGNITY: STOCKHOLM
Rhode Island School of Design

“In the calculus of the built environment, housing is one of the hairiest urban planning questions. The balance has to be absolutely perfect yet flexible. If there is too much, the cost of upkeep could bankrupt a municipality. But too little can lead to the type of housing crisis that many cities struggle to turn around. Stockholm is a fascinating case study in the attempt to find this balance.”
Hökarängen is a suburb locared 30 minutes outside Stockholm city center. A Request for Proposal was provided as guidelines for our project. This RFP detailed a need for community gathering spaces that could generate the local economy without promoting gentrification. Our approach investigated the forested area surrounding the housing of the neighborhood and provided a “third place” for residents to enjoy outside of their homes.
