Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island is a crucial stop for migrant families and refugees coming into the United States. I want to create a welcoming place to restore their faith in the process and give them hope during this tumultuous time.
A whimsical sketch model that has no privileged viewpoint inspired the footprint and sectional quality of the building.
There is a strict grid system in contradiction with a lack of a grid system in various parts of the building. Since this is a mixed-use building with residential program and group-oriented program, the organization relies on the circulation to distinguish between what is public and private. Therefore, an exterior circulation scheme for residential areas turns into an interior circulation scheme, with an intentional transitional space in between the two.
